4th Annual Howl-O-Ween in the Pearl

by shooter
Halloween-2008-134 Friday night, Howl-O-Ween, was our 4th Annual Howl-O-Ween in the Pearl.  We had a great showing of ghosts, goblins, and ghouls-both young and old(er). We saw many familiar faces, as well as several new additions out for their first trick-or-treat adventure. By our count we had our busiest year ever!

Have a look at some of the families who stopped by:
See them all on this slideshow!       Parents, to get your photos go here , select the "Halloween 2008" set, and follow the instructions to download your pictures!   We want to thank Isobel's Clubhouse for hosting the event at the clubhouse this year.  Isobel's is a not-for-profit place for families to meet and play with arts and crafts, story times, costume dress up and toys.  If you'd like to learn mo

Spooky Times in Portland

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree There are many ways to have a great time in Portland this Halloween, especially if you're on a budget. Ever thought about learning how to make homemade pumpkin pie ?  How about designing your own costume from scratch?   Halloween is also a great time to brush up on your arts and crafts skills in preparation for the great holiday season to come. You may want to start with putting together your own haunted flower arrangement .   There's no need to fear this year-if you weren't invited to a Halloween bash that is! Luckily for you, there's plenty of spooky and haunting things to do in the Portland area for “el Dia de Los Muertos” (the Day of the Dead).  Portland happens to be a vibrant city where the ghosts of the past like to linger and play. There is a lot to do and see before the month is over.   Here are some event links for Portla

TBA Day Two » Antony and the Johnsons, Neal Medlyn

by shooter
113-Neal-Medlyn-9-5-2008-Primary TBA is definitely about contrasts.  In the course of a couple of hours, we went from the dreamy, haunting voice of Antony Hegarty to three guys re-creating Beyonce's 2007 live concert DVD.

Antony and the Johnsons

This was an amazing performance: a unique marriage of Antony's hypnotic vocals, powerful lyrics, and the lush sound of the orchestra. Antony's performance was somewhat awkward. He lacked the stage presence that I normally associate with such a powerful voice—but somehow that made the performance even more compelling.
Neal Medlyn

There is something so wrong, and yet so right, about a skinny white guy re-creating a Beyonce concert.  It was funny and mesmerizing at the same time.  The surreal nature of it was captivating, and the energy that Medlyn put into the performance was exciting.  He had the audience cheering and waving their hands as if they were watching Beyonce.  I think the photos t

TBA Round Up Round Up

by shooter
tba-day-1 Most publications have their TBA picks, highlights, or complete guides.  There's lots of good info out there, so I thought I'd round up all the TBA round ups I could find. Now, you can make an informed decision about what you want to see!

The Portland Mercury's Destination Fun is a list of highlights for the next few days, and their amazingly thorough guide to the entire festival is one of the best resources out there.

The Portland Tribune talks about Mike Daisey and Kenny Mellman and Bridget Everett .

The Oregonian mentions Antony and the Johnsons (we are going to that tonight and are VERY excited about it) and Neal Medlyn (who is hysterical).  Here's a link to our previous post about Neil along with a link to a video.  Brian Libby talks about visual artists at TBA.

Willamette Week's T.B.Ah-ha! is their highlight list, including that important list of FREE events.

Ultra talks about Sojour

Clowns and very few cars on for Last Thursday

by shooter
albertacarfree Unfortunately I'm still recovering from a different time zone (Thailand) and didn't have the energy to go to Last Thursday . Fortunately, Jonathan over at BikePortland did and has great coverage of the unofficial street closure.

According to Jonathan, the evening went really well, the police handled the situation with patience, and as the evening progressed drivers did the logical thing and avoided Alberta. I hope the success of this evening is a launching pad to continue closing the street for Last Thursday. It makes it so much more enjoyable for all those who attend, and is really only a minor inconvenience for drivers.
