Get Two Free Kids Tickets to Bodyvox!
by renee
BodyVox's newest show Encores... is coming up soon! October 22-25. Actually, it's not really a new show, it's Encores: The Best of BodyVox and features a collection of our audience favorites (yes, they got to vote!). But, even though I'll be performing in each of the shows, the most fun time for me comes during our Saturday Matinee. This is when we have our regular interactive intermission activity for ages 3-12, otherwise known as the "Intermission Boogie", led by none other than...yes....myself, Teacher Renee. Check out the info below for more details, and you can visit us at www.bodyvox.com , or email me personally, if you'd like, at renee@bodyvox.com . Get ready for high-fives and fun—hope to see you on the stage! On October 25th at 2 p.m., BodyVox is proud to bring you a special Family Matinee presented by Greasy Kid Stuff with Belinda and Hova . Kid Friendly TBA
by nancy
Wow - yesterday was an amazing day for kids and the Time Based Art Festival . We biked up to tiny tba a few minutes before 11:00, and there was already a line out the door. Excited kids hopping with anticipation and their sleepy-looking parents . We all experienced that moment of shock as you walk from bright sunlight into a dimly lit building. And then the noise of tiny feet running to explore the space. A stage, a film projector, DJ equipment, cookies, crafts... And that was just the inside. My child was not interested in the films being played on the stage, but very interested in drawing on film and then watching it play through the rickety film projector with Indiekid Films . I found myself struggling to describe, to a child only familiar with digital video, what exactly this contraption was. Film was hanging over rafters, artists were hand splicing, and the machine rattled as it projected images a

TBA Day Three » Lemon Anderson and Ten Eight Tiny Dances
by shooter
Day three of TBA had two surprises. We went to Lemon Anderson's show, not really knowing what to expect, and found a terrific storyteller and poet. Ten Tiny Dances turned into a "lite" version with two of the performances bowing out. These things happen with live performances and while there may have been only eight dances, they were far from "lite".Lemon Anderson
Lemon Anderson's "The Beautiful Struggle" is his personal memoir told through a blend of hip-hop and urban poetry. You learn about his growing up with a mother who was an addict—and later stricken with HIV. Upon her death, with no one to care for him, he turned to dealing crack to survive. During a stint in jail, he discovered his love of words and poetry—his purpose in life. Lemon's performance was brilliant. He is smart, funny, thoughtful, and direct. His ability to fully portray a variety of characters

TBA Day Two » Antony and the Johnsons, Neal Medlyn
by shooter
TBA is definitely about contrasts. In the course of a couple of hours, we went from the dreamy, haunting voice of Antony Hegarty to three guys re-creating Beyonce's 2007 live concert DVD. Antony and the Johnsons
This was an amazing performance: a unique marriage of Antony's hypnotic vocals, powerful lyrics, and the lush sound of the orchestra. Antony's performance was somewhat awkward. He lacked the stage presence that I normally associate with such a powerful voice—but somehow that made the performance even more compelling.
Neal Medlyn
There is something so wrong, and yet so right, about a skinny white guy re-creating a Beyonce concert. It was funny and mesmerizing at the same time. The surreal nature of it was captivating, and the energy that Medlyn put into the performance was exciting. He had the audience cheering and waving their hands as if they were watching Beyonce. I think the photos t

TBA Round Up Round Up
by shooter
Most publications have their TBA picks, highlights, or complete guides. There's lots of good info out there, so I thought I'd round up all the TBA round ups I could find. Now, you can make an informed decision about what you want to see!The Portland Mercury's Destination Fun is a list of highlights for the next few days, and their amazingly thorough guide to the entire festival is one of the best resources out there.
The Portland Tribune talks about Mike Daisey and Kenny Mellman and Bridget Everett .
The Oregonian mentions Antony and the Johnsons (we are going to that tonight and are VERY excited about it) and Neal Medlyn (who is hysterical). Here's a link to our previous post about Neil along with a link to a video. Brian Libby talks about visual artists at TBA.
Willamette Week's T.B.Ah-ha! is their highlight list, including that important list of FREE events.
Ultra talks about Sojour

Back to School!!
by renee
It's almost Back To School time for BodyVox! At least for the E-Team, the group of five professional dancers that take BodyVox repertory into schools for 50 minute assemblies. BodyVox, Portland's own whimsical, theatrical, and innovative contemporary dance company, has been performing in schools for almost as long as they've been around (10 years last spring!). The E-Team is only about 5 years old, but in those five years has developed am amazing reputation for providing schools, elementary thru high, with exciting, interactive and education performances. That's the other cool thing about the E-team. We use a great deal of intention and focus to develop shows that teachers can feel good about taking 50 minutes out of their day for. By that I mean, each show (and classroom residency) focuses on integrating dance with an academic topic (or area of concern or need, such as communication). Our newest show, 'Outside the Vox', demonstrates this by connecting each of the seven dance pieces

Ten Tiny Dances - This Weekend!
by CHYCHELE
Ten Tiny Dances has been a Portland staple since 2002. Founded by dancer/choreographer Mike Barber. TTD is a twice-yearly performance series. This special event, happening at the South Waterfront this weekend , features a new format for Ten Tiny Dances. Unlike performances past, artists will not perform on a single stage for audience members. Instead, the ten participating artists will be performing on 4 x 4 foot stages at 10 different locations around the South Waterfront with dances repeating every 15 minutes. You, the audience member, choose your own route, maps with locations of stages provided. As you move between stages, strolling musicians will enliven your path, and fabulous local, organic food will be available for purchase. Walking distances between the stages are short and total an approximate mile. As mentioned previously, the dances repeat every 15 minutes. In order to see all ten performances in their entirety you should begin at any of the ten locations when the fir
