Instructor Alice Peters Diffely demonstrates the finer points of ChiWalking (p.6) and sommelier Timothy Nishimoto gives us advice on how to build community one glass of wine at a time (p.8). Here's to a healthy and happy 2009! Download your copy   About the Pearl District Newsletter The Pearl District Newsletter is published six times per year by Neighborhood Notes. 2008 at Isobel's Clubhouse

by nancy
Isobels_Clubhouse Grateful. Joyful. Humble. Just a few of my feelings as I compiled a set of  photos from our year at Isobel's Clubhouse . Isobel's Clubhouse  is a dream come true, a collaboration between families, donors and a community that believes that children are good for the central city, and the central city is good for kids.  The  look on Joan's face  the day  Zimmerman Community Center  signed the lease and got the keys says it all. For those who don't know her, Joan is a ZCC board member as well as Chair of the  Pearl District Neighborhood Association . Like many other adults in our community she has long advocated for a community center, and for the resources families need to thrive in central Portland.  Isobel's Clubhouse is a small (490 square feet) but significant (220 families and growing) step toward these long held goals. And it has a lot of love from the community. Gun and Tom Denhart donated the space. ZCC signed the lease

Thank You Portland Classical Chinese Garden

by nancy
chinese garden Many thanks the  Portland Classical Chinese Garden  and Education Director Joan Kvitka for a lovely winter tour of the Garden.  Joan has that unusual ability to connect with children of all ages, and help them identify what they see and sense. The group learned about patterns and symbolism, inspected pomegranates growing in the courtyard, and had the help of a few Mandarin speaking children to learn simple phrases. The winter garden is a special treat, and was appreciated by all.If you were unable to attend, or want to remind your child of the tour, you might like the the  Family Guide  that the garden offers on their website.   The Garden is also planning extensive  Chinese New Year festivities  starting January 26th. And we're excited to announce that Joan will make a guest appearance at  Isobel's Clubhouse  on January 16th and 28th to read Chinese stories to the children. I've had a preview of some of the stories she's chosen

UPDATE on Fate of In Other Words Books

by NoPo Ness
Last month I informed you all of the grave financial situation that the country's last non-profit feminist bookstore was in and dire need to save our precious, In Other Words Books . They made their first financial goal and bought themselves a little time and now it's up to you to help them finish the job. Let all your friends and family know to donate what they can to this worthy cause. No donation is too small to save this unforgettable institution. An Update on Our Financial Situation Dear friends, We want to first thank you for your continued and overwhelming support for our bookstore/community space. It is truly inspiring to see a community come together and rise up to sustain a feminist institution like In Other Words. We also want to let you know the status of our fundraising efforts to date. We have reached our first goal! As of Monday, December 22nd, less than two weeks from the date of our initial plea, we have taken in over $13,000 from online, in-store, and

Achieve Your Fitness Resolution For 2009

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree How many years have gone by where your New Year's resolution was to exercise and get in shape , but by the end of the year you've found yourself having to renew that promise?

If you aren't a hardcore athlete , and don't plan to be, then yoga lessons may be the genie in a bottle that makes your New Year's wishes come true in 2009.

Especially if you have prior joint and bone injuries, doing plyometrics, weightlifting and running on a treadmill can put a lot of strain on your vulnerable body parts.  The non-abrasive, body flexing, joint strengthening art of yoga is just what the doctor orders.  The dual benefit of yoga over many other forms of exercises is that it is a powerful mental discipline as well.  Yoga means union, which through my interpretation is the union of the mind and body.  Practicing meditation has many great health benefits beyond the physical, as many doctors claim.&

I continue to be committed to working with Portland neighborhoods, businesses, and community organizations to provide services and information to assist in empowering residents to identify and support issues that benefit Portland. One way we can support each others efforts is to explore joint legislative objectives and work together in Salem to achieve positive results. I am inviting you to participate in a meeting, co-sponsored by the City's Offices of Neighborhood Involvement and Government Relations, designed to provide you with information for the upcoming 2009 Legislative Session. City of Portland employees exhibit generous spirit this holiday season

by jenniferd
2008 Toy Drive Dump Truck Commissioner Randy Leonard challenged two of the bureaus he oversees to do something different this holiday season. He didn't challenge them to boost morale or work harder during these stressful economic times. Leonard challenged the Portland Water Bureau and the city's Bureau of Development Services to a friendly holiday competition; a competition to fill barrels for the needy. The Water Bureau allied with Portland Fire and Rescue's Toy N Joy Makers program to fill toy barrels. The Bureau of Development Services picked Sunshine Barrels, a food donation program headed up by the Portland Police Bureau. The competition began on December 3 and ended this afternoon. The prize? Not much, really - a hearty congratulation from the Commissioner and bragging rights, of course. Fancy prize or not, however, city employees embraced this competition with a stunning amount of voracity and enthusiasm, especially given the rough state of the economy. The Water Bureau sent 53 barrels off with firef

Multnomah electronic recycling project underway

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree This holiday season, as you head out to the market to buy ingredients to prepare a holiday meal or bake cookies for you know who, think about recycling your old electronic goodies in preparation for the new ones you may receive as gifts.  The materials that make up your electronic gadgets are often times toxic, therefore Multnomah County is offering its residents an alternative option for discarding their toxic trash.

You can recycle your old cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, chargers and Bluetooth headsets into one of the free recycling bins at 11 locations across the county . You can find the drop boxes at libraries and other county buildings.
Photo: Olivia Bucks | The Oregonian
The program was started by Commissioner Jeff Cogen last month in anticipation of the coming holiday season.  The Environment Protection Agency predicts that we recycle only 20% of old cell phones, and that we hold onto 130 million unused phones.
