Is Portland Falling Behind in Education?
by TeachStreet
As many of you know, this week marks the 25 th anniversary of the sobering delivery of “ A Nation at Risk ” speech, by the then President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Reagan had understood, long ago, that the real problem America faced with regard to its national security is its education crisis. A LEED Platinum Portable Classroom?
by shooter
Portland Public Schools plans to build the first "high performance" portable classroom. It is a prototype net-zero energy building that may eventually replace portable classrooms in the PPS district.Schools typically turn to mobile units for their low cost, but these units are not always healthy or energy efficient. This prototype building will provide, on a small scale, a test case demonstrating what kind of return is possible with this type of sustainable design.
Money for the project has come from a variety of sources including $250,000 from the district; $400,000 in gifts, grants, and incentives, along with pro bono design services from SRG Architects and Green Building Services.
Final approval should come from the school board on Sept 29. If approved construction could begin in early October.
Read the story at the Daily Journal of Commerce.
