Vegan at the Vegetarian House
by Veritable Vegan
OK, it's a bit ironic that the Vegetarian House -- Portland's vegetarian Chinese restaurant -- is located between butcher shops, but then again .... How cool is it that we have such an establishment has taken root in the heart of Chinatown? What I love about this place is that the Orange Chik'n makes my mouth water just writing about it and the all-you-can-eat weekday lunch buffet is a steal at only about $6.50 or so. One note: Some vegans aren't crazy about meat analogs. If you're among that camp, you might best try one of the other excellent vegan establishments in town because the Vegetarian House leans heavily on protein sources of tofu and seitan. For the rest of us .... did I mention the Orange Chik'n? Vegetarian House is located at 22 NW 4th Ave.; 503-274-0160. Aug 8,2008
Portland protester back from China
by shooter
Personally, I think this guy was crazy to go to China and protest during the Olympics. It sounds like he was banking on the Chinese government knowing the world was watching, and guessed right. Given he was only detained for 13 hours, the Chinese government using his credit card to buy a ticket home, being fed Chinese fast food in China, and having the police take the SIM card for his phone, I'd say he was pretty lucky. Then again, the last thing China wants is to have a full-blown drama about an American protestor being held by the Chinese police during the Olympics.
That doesn't change my thinking though.
I have been torn with these Olympics. In the past I've said the Olympics shouldn't be politicized. I also believe that rather than isolating communist governments, like Cuba (yes, I have been there), we should engage them. The best way to act against an oppressive government is to let the people know what it's like elsewhere. Change will com

Merchants look to Uwajimaya for Old Town/Chinatown boost
by shooter
This story about the proposed Uwajimaya project coincides nicely with the presentation today by Uwajimaya and Sockeye Development to the Old Town/Chinatown Visions Committee. What's interesting to note is the interest this proposal is generating interest from nearby property owners to redevelop their properties. Empty storefronts in the neighboring blocks would fill up relatively soon. That's why this project is important. The area still has its problems; drug trafficking is mentioned in the story. But a business that would create a huge amount of foot traffic, and bring in more stores to the area would help drive the drug trafficking out. You put that many eyes on the street and change will happen.
From the Portland Tribune : Howard Weiner is looking to move. The owner of Cal Skate Skateboards, on Northwest Sixth Avenue in Old Town, already has his eye on a new spot, the corner shop at Northwest Fifth Avenue and Davis Str

Uwajimaya may put store in Portland's Old Town/Chinatown
by shooter
We've been hearing about this for a while from PDC. It would be awesome to have Uwajimaya in Old Town/Chinatown. I make periodic trips to the Beaverton store when I need authentic ingredients for Thai cooking. The place is amazing and has cheap prices. A store in OT/CT would be a huge draw, bringing in people from all over the city. This project has the potential of being a real anchor to the area, drawing more businesses and people, and contributing hugely to the revitalization of OT/CT.
I hope Sockeye Development and the PDC can come to terms on this project. It is extremely important and would have a huge impact on the neighborhood.
From The Oregonian : Prospects of an Asian superstore generates excitement among neighbors and business leaders Uwajimaya Inc., a Seattle-based group of Asian superstores famous for crammed shelves of produce, seafood, delicacies and sundries, is considering a new apt outpost in Portland's new

Food • Pay a little, eat a lot at new hot spots
by shooter
After yesterday's Portland Tribune article about the current challenges of the restaurant industry it's good to read about a couple new places, especially when they are moderate in price. Always up for ethnic food, I hope to give each of these a try next time in the neighborhood. I love tamales so a place that specializes in them is really enticing. Hot Tamales sounds as if they know how to do them just right. A friend of mine is Korean and she does hot pot dinners . I'm guessing that Beijing Hot Pot Restaurant is basically the same. Give it a try. It's a fun way to eat with a group of friends. From the Portland Tribune : While a trip toward 82nd Avenue isn’t most people’s idea of a vacation, it’s worth making the trek to visit two tasty new restaurants. Need more incentive? At both, you’ll eat lavishly for far less than $20 a person, so you can keep saving for a real trip. First up is Hot Tamales (8650 S.E. Division St., 503-777-7043), th
