Limited-Edition “Portland Pilsner” To Be Tapped at McMenamins Fulton Pub & Brewery
by pearlgirl
What do you get when you combine a limited-edition Czech-style ale and a Prohibition-era hangout? The McMenamins release of its "Portland Pilsner" at Fulton Pub & Brewery in the South Portland neighborhood. For those who haven't visited the Fulton, it dates back to 1926 and offers burgers, tots, beer and other delicious pub fare. Speculation says that during Prohibition, the pub might have provided patrons the odd pint of beer as an unadvertised special. Portland Pilsner was brewed in the pub's onsite brewery, guaranteeing its patrons the freshest pint possible. For fans of McMenamins' signature Hammerhead Ale, legend has it that the brew's hallowed recipe was perfected at this cozy neighborhood pub many years ago. About Portland PilsnerAccording to McMenamins Brewer Alex McGaw, the beer is crisp and bitter at the forefront, followed by a sweet and malty finish, with 5.5% ABV. Portland Pilsner begins pouring on Friday, January 9, 2009, only at the Fulto

Mmmm.... Nob Hill Burgers
by northwest nola
So, coming home from work today, I find myself craving nothing but a Nob Hill (Bar & Grill) burger. MMMM... can you taste it? A perfectly cooked, juicy beef patty topped in anything I want and nothing I don't want. And the fries? Divine! I think it will be the perfect, greasy end to a long Wednesday. Now, understand that this blogger does not eat burgers regularly -- or even often. In fact, I don't even eat red meat; except for burgers at Nob Hill. They are just that good. Why do I love it so much? It has something to do with the dive-y feeling of the place, mixed with the terse service people and the delicious food. I guess it makes for an all out entertaining and delicious dining experience. And the smoke? Well, that will be going away soon, but even I (the self-proclaimed anti-smoking queen of the world) can deal with it until then, to wrap my mouth around a Nob Hill. It's worth it, I promise. I'll be there for dinner tonight? You? nn

by geoffk
Voicebox Karaoke opened its doors this week with a unique concept that is an extremely welcome addition to the Portland nightlife scene and stands out in the crowd of Portland Karaoke options. Comprised of six private rooms (The smallest holds 8 and the largest 24), Voicebox gives you the ability to have a karaoke bar experience with just a few close friends. Each room is equipped with its own karaoke system (complete with two mics) and features high end sound and display systems. Voicebox Karaoke creator Scott Simon has transformed the old Tao of Tea space into an extremely modern and hip night time destination (featuring the larger than life comic art from the Pander Brothers). Deschutes Brewery Hop Trip at Belmont Station
by geoffk
If you are a fan of hoppy beers October is nirvana! Living in Oregon we benefit from an extremely bountiful crop of fresh hops . Local breweries take advantage of this bounty by releasing "Fresh Hop" seasonal beers brewed with these "fresh from the harvest vine". The Oregon Brewer's Guild has had a number of Fresh Hop tasting events around Oregon (most recently they had a Fresh Hop Tastival at Hopworks Urban Brewery ). After tasting a good number of the Fresh Hop Beers I have to say my favorite is Deschutes Brewery's Hop Trip Ale . This smooth and slightly sweet ale is so perfectly balanced and imminently drinkable. I had it on tap at the Belmont Station on SE Stark & 45th. They've got a number of the Fresh Hop beers on tap right now and now is the perfect time to check them out!

The Deadliest Ale
by pearlgirl
Rogue Ales and Captain Sig Hansen of the Discovery Channel's The Deadliest Catch have collaborated on the creation of Captain Sig's Deadliest Ale . The partnership between Rogue and Captain Sig was spawned when Sig decided that his world class Alaskan King and Opelia crab needed a beer to complement and balance the strength and flavor of his catch. The Deadliest Ale will be available in serigraphed 22oz. bottles that feature Captain Sig's boat, the Northwestern. The crest on the boat symbolizes family, heritage, history and has 3 points that represent the three Hansen brothers. Captain Sig's Deadliest Ale is India Pale Ale meets Red Ale that combines the traditional maltiness of a red ale with the hoppy profile of an IPA. Captain Sig's Deadliest Ale will be available in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Northern California, Maine, Massachusetts, the Gulfs of Florida and Texas, Canada, and Norway. A portion of the proceeds of Captain Sig's Deadliest Ale will be given to the Fisherman's F

Vegan Beer at Voleur
by Veritable Vegan
"Vegan beer?" our companions asked after hearing the waiter at Voleur describe what's on tap. "What would make one beer vegan, and another not? What's the difference?" "Isinglass." "But what is isinglass?" "Fish guts." "So there are fish guts in my beer?!" Well, maybe. Isinglass isn't necessarily in the final product — or at least not much — but it's used to clarify some beers and wine. According Wikipedia : "Isinglass is a substance obtained from the swimbladders of fish (especially Beluga sturgeon); used mainly for the clarification of wine and beer, it is a form of collagen." (The Wikipedia entry also includes a few links for lists of vegan beers and wines.) And that's why the good folks at Voleur are kind enough to point out not only what's organic, but also what's vegan. Because, really, why would you want to drink your beer that's already been down the gullet once? Vol

A Vegan Hungry Tiger Too
by Veritable Vegan
I've heard about vegan selections on the menu over at Hungry Tiger Too , and so when I was out biking in that neighborhood recently, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to pop in and see what the fuss was about. The place was busy — always a good sign. The menu posted in the window looked hopeful: several things were clearly marked as being vegan or easily prepared so. Another good sign. Restaurant, bar and outdoor areas offered a variety of seating, service was OK (seat yourself; order at the bar when you're ready), and the menu prices weren't bad either ($6 for BLT, fries and pickle that made for an adequate lunch to share). Of the menu, there were perhaps 4 to 6 vegan choices (couple of sandwiches, couple of salads, couple of sides). Sometimes when dining, I like to have lots of attention; other times I want to just go in, plunk down for a beer and sandwich, and not have my water glass topped off every five minutes. If that's you, too, then Hungry Tig

5th Avenue Grows Grass—National Park(ing) Day
by pearlgirl
A surprising “green” transformation will take place in Portland on Friday, September 19th – one that will give Portlanders another reason to leave their cars at home. Parking spaces downtown may be sprouting grass… and a bench, or better! In an effort to reclaim the streets for National PARK(ing) Day , Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants’ Portland properties are spearheading local efforts for this one-day global event where artists, citizens and businesses temporarily transform parking spots into parks for the day in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the Trust For Public Land (TPL). TPL is the only national nonprofit dedicated to conserving land for public recreation and enjoyment.Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco Portland , Hotel Vintage Plaza , Pazzo Ristorante , Red Star and other sponsors have collaborated to close down and convert an entire block of parking spaces into more than a dozen parks on SW 5th Ave. between Washington and
