Citywide Accessibility Tool Launched
by where's lulu
The new Portland-only web site Where's Lulu is a free, online database where Portlanders can rate and review places and services (mostly businesses) based on their accessibility. Example: Are the curb cuts next to the bus stop in front of a Stumptown Coffee Roasters wheelchair-friendly? A search tool allows for filtering using criteria such as whether nearby public transit options exist. Coming up: The ability to upload photos depicting accessibility or inaccessibility of businesses. We founded the site to provide info making it easier for disabled people to get from point A to point B, as well as to establish higher standards of accessibility for businesses and public places in general. The local disabled community is already on board, with users voicing opinions on everything from just how close a Mac Store is to the MAX line, to the wheelchair maneuverability between aisles at swank Southeast eatery Noble Rot. To join Where's Lulu for free, or to learn more, visit http

New Bakery Looks Good Enough to Eat
by pearlgirl
Willamette Week has the first look at the new Two Tarts Bakery at 2309 NW Kearney. The new digs and the baked goodies look absolutely delicious. Thanks to Ben Waterhouse for derailing my good intentions. The photos look good enough to eat, but since they're not going to satisfy my sudden craving for a Cappuccino Cream, a shortbread, a Pecan Tessie or a Double Chocolate Chew—guess I'll have to head over there soon. Like, maybe today. Damn you, Ben!!!

Demolition Begins for Broadstone Enso Apartments
by pearlgirl
The building at 14th and Lovejoy—former home of Fullfillment Corporation of America—has been demolished to make way for the new Broadstone Enso Apartments. The fence went up a couple weeks ago, and over the past week, the building has been torn down in stages. Obviously, we started taking photos a little later in the process! What's this? The little building at the corner of 14th and Lovejoy (the former home of Pearl Real Estate and the Wyatt Showroom) was not demolished. Everything around it is gone, but this tiny building will stay. Think Safety » TriMet Night Stop
by pearlgirl
When daylight-saving time ends on Sunday, Nov. 2, darkness will come earlier so it's a good time to remember TriMet's Night Stop program: Riders can get off at a safe area along a bus route between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., instead of only at designated stops.Night Stop Guidelines Tell the bus operator where you want to stop a block or two ahead of your destination and the operator will choose the safest spot near the requested location that is safe for both the rider and the bus. Available anywhere outside Fareless Square between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Covers drop offs only; riders still need to board at designated stops. Be Seen & Be Safe Riders may be hard to see after dark and can take steps to increase their visibility: Wear light-colored or reflective clothing and wave as the bus approaches. Wave a reflector, safety strobe or small flashlight to alert the driver when your bus approaches. Beginning Oct. 29, bus operators will have a limit

Sellwood Bridge Alternatives Released
by shooter
As reported in The Oregonian, Multnomah County released detailed information about five proposals to repair or replace the Sellwood Bridge . Details include cost estimates, length of construction, and number of businesses and residents displaced by the proposed alternatives.Costs range from $280 million to $361 million, or the county could spend just $54 million to repair and maintain the bridge as is for 20 years. However, this would not address any long-term traffic problems.
Bridge configurations range from 2 traffic lanes with a generous shared walk/bike path on one side of the bridge to 4 traffic lanes with a shared walk/bike paths on both sides of the bridge. At the very least, 9 businesses and one resident will be displaced, with the most ambitious alternative displacing 48 businesses and 6 residents.
I wonder if the cost estimates include paying market rate for the properties of those businesses and residents that

Everyone loves the idea of working from home. Although the thought of setting your own hours, working in your PJ's, having the world's best boss and eliminating that pesky commute is incredibly alluring—the reality is that working at home is incredibly difficult. Get in the Zone First things first: It's important to do a little checking and make sure that your home office meets local zoning requirements. There are reasons for residential and commercial zoning—it's not always possible to run your business out of your home.
