Pesticide-Free Parks Program Designates Two New Parks in Portland Neighborhoods

by pearlgirl
PesticideFreeZone The Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides (NCAP) has partnered with Portland Parks and Recreation to implement the Pesticide-Free Parks program. The program, which began as a trial at Arbor Lodge, Sewallcrest and Lair Hill Parks three years ago, has been very successful. As a result two new parks are being designated pesticide-free. "We have been able to replace the use of pesticides with people power." said Haley Smith of Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides. "We're very pleased that Portland Parks and Recreation has designated these parks as Pesticide-Free." Volunteers keep weeds at bay by hand weeding, mulching and propane-powered weed burners. Over the three year trial program, 244 volunteers put in 1,374 hour

by souk
TorVlogo Halloween is the one day each year we culturally expect a knock on the door and it also always falls just days before the election. You may be too old to trick-or-treat, but you're never too old to trick-or-vote. Studies show that face-to-face contact is the most effective method to boost voter turnout—increasing participation by as much as 8–12%.

Trick or Vote is the nation's largest non-partisan get-out-the-vote canvass hits the streets … in costume

"Trick or Vote" is the effort of a coalition working to make targeted voter contacts in urban areas on Halloween. Just 4 days before the election, costumed volunteers will canvass low-turnout, youth-dense precincts to remind people to vote, distribute nonpartisan voter guides, and generate both grassroots and media awareness of Election Day.

After the massive canvass we'll gather again for the Ghouls and Goblins Gala, a Halloween bash of epic proportions, and boogie down th

Pearl District Neighborhood Photo Submission

by pearlgirl
This photo is a little piece of history that most people now living at the Casey will never know about. I took photos every day while they were building the Casey a year ago and this was a strike that went on for a few days. It must have been resolved, because one day the guys and the signs disappeared. There was a lot of action around the building of the Casey. Now, you would never know any of it happened! -Roxanne Mossman       Guys With Starbucks On Strike At The Casey
