Shop Talk – The Paper Station
by alex
I'm not a big fan of air travel (too many people in too small a space with too many bumps and mechanical noises!) but I am a big fan of the Portland airport. It's a nice, manageable size, clean and organized, and best of all, they have some great shops where you can easily kill some time if you're early for a flight or waiting for a loved one to arrive.I especially love The Paper Station – as the name implies they have a great selection of greeting cards and other paper products (I found the cutest graduation card there not too long ago). No Guts, No Glory: Renovating the Silverado/Club Portland Complex
by pearlgirl
Thanks to Just Out for sharing the booty and giving us a glimpse into the renovation process of the old Silverado/Club Portland project. It's still hard to believe they're not knocking it flat—can you imagine converting a former bathhouse into a luxury hotel ? (the lap of luxury, perhaps?) Go, Gerding Edlen, Go!!! I'm definitely looking forward to the historian's take on this project and seeing how some of the, um, found objects are reused in the new hotel. Ths is definitely one of the more interesting, and ambitious, renovation projects around! Read the article at Just Out . photo: courtesy of Just Out

Entrepreneurial Series at CubeSpace
by pearlgirl
Here's a good idea: giving small business owners free access to professional help. Check out the Entrepreneurial Series at CubeSpace... It can be challenging for small business owners to find the right experts to answer their questions, to subcontract on a project, or to provide needed services at reasonable prices. Our Entrepreneurial Series is designed to support Portland's microbusiness community by helping owners get the access they need to these people and resources, all at reasonable prices. Morning Meetings happen every weekday. They are free and open to the public. Come into CubeSpace between 9 and 10 a.m. on weekdays to chat with the professional-in-residence about your needs. We promise he or she is there to educate you and give you great advice, not to advertise to you. The available topics are: Monday: Topic alternates between legal issues, including questions about incorporation and doing business in Oregon, and patent information. Click to see the schedu

Office space rental market softens
by shooter
The Oregonian reports that the commercial real estate market in Portland is softening. I wonder what this development means for the off again/on again One Waterfront Place project. I previously posted about One Waterfront Place when the developers presented their latest proposal to the Pearl District Neighborhood Association in early June. At the time co-developer Jim Winkler said, "as soon as we get our anchor tenant who leases 80,000 square feet we'll begin". If the commercial real estate market is softening that doesn't bode well for Winkler to find his anchor tenant. If this development doesn't happen the PDC should pull the plug and use the $9 million committed to the project for something that will be built. I think the office building would be a good addition and would bring more foot traffic to the North Pearl. However, if the project can't get off the ground it should be killed once and for all.

Get A Charge Out of Downtown
by pearlgirl
If you drive a plug-n-go vehicle, here's some good news: PGE installed a shiny new charging station right outside its headquarters at 121 SW Salmon. The company plans to install additional charging stations throughout Portland metro— find out where ! Q: What do the new stations look like and how do they work? A: With a modern, blue design, PGE developed the new charging stations to be easily recognizable and easy to use. Drivers simply park their cars at a station and plug in their vehicles the same way a household appliance plugs into the wall. During this test phase, there is no charge to use the stations. Learn more about the new charging stations here , here and here . update: here's another article at Daily Journal of Commerce

Cars and clowns on Alberta Street?
by shooter
This bit about Last Thursday was posted on the Merc's Blogtown . Someone blocked Alberta Street with a couple of junkers to make the event car free, until the junkers were towed. This time volunteers from the neighborhood association will encourage people to take an alternate route, if the drivers don't, then clowns on bicycles will escort them down the road.I like the idea and hope that it works. Last Thursday is very popular and crowded. Leaving the street free for people to roam would be a huge plus for the monthly event.

Bar Mingo Gets Some Luvin'
by pearlgirl
Have you been to Bar Mingo? It's the casual bar that adjoins Cafe Mingo —that scrumptious place at 807 NW 21st. If you're in the mood for great food with a short wait, this place could fit the bill. Read the review at the Portland Tribune.

TriMet will check fares at eastside MAX stops
by shooter
This is a clear change in direction or TriMet, and in my opinion is long overdue. It's pretty obvious that the honor system hasn't worked. It seems odd and wrong that only 1/5 of TriMet's operating budget is from ticket receipts. I am very much in favor of public transit and expanding the system, but users of the system should be paying to use it. It is far too easy to ride the Max without paying.About that warning versus citation rate of 63% for riders without valid tickets, are you kidding me? How long has the system been in existence? How long of people known you have to pay to ride? TriMet GM Fred Hanson has a goal of 50% warnings? Really? How about 20% or 10%? OK, my tirade is done, but TriMet really needs to enforce paying to ride.
The 2 stations that will be modified are at NE 82nd Ave. and in Gresham.

And, while you're at it, check out the company website for a peek at the "coffee by day, club by night" concept for a preview of coming attractions.
