Bay 13 - In search of flavor...
by shooter
So I went to Bay 13 last night, before going to see Silversun Pickups and Snow Patrol . Pearlgirl and I thought it would be nice to try the latest restaurant in the ‘hood prior to the show. Bay 13 is located at NW 13th and NW Irving. The interior is big and expansive, has 3 “kitchens”, a full bar, a large dining room that sports a long community table in addition to the tables. The 3 kitchens include a standard kitchen with ovens, stoves, etc; a sushi bar; and a raw bar where you can get a variety of raw oysters. Did I say the interior was big? Don’t expect a quite intimate dinner, but large groups will appreciate its size.
Not being horribly hungry, we decided to share a salad and entrée, after having our own bowl of soup. I had the “chowda” (that’s the way it appears on the menu) and Pearlgirl had the sweet potato bisque. My "chowda" was very one-dimensional. There was no seafood taste even though there were plenty of clams and over all was just average

Re: Boundaries here, boundaries there...
by pearlgirl
I just heard from PDC and apparently the sign saying "This is Pearl District" which is located on the east side of Broadway -- in Old Town Chinatown -- was put there by mistake. According to PDC, the installer will make a correction.
Thank you PDC. :-)

Boundaries here, boundaries there...
by shooterWhile walking around Sunday afternoon I wandered into Old Town/Chinatown and was a bit perplexed. Within one block there are 3 of the new walking signs from PDOT and PDC. The first, on the southeast corner of Broadway and Burnside, states you are in Old Town/Chinatown. The second, on the southeast corner of Couch and Broadway, also states you are in Old Town/Chinatown. The third, across Couch from the second, on the northeast corner of Couch and Broadway, states you are in the Pearl District. The photo above shows the 2 signs on the same side of Broadway across Couch from each other.
So what gives? If the official boundary between the Pearl and Old Town/Chinatown is the middle of Broadway then why is there a Pearl District sign on the east side of Broadway. PDOT, PDC?

Going condo crazy...
by pearlgirl
Patrick Kessi's firm, W&K Development LLC, broke ground recently on the 937 , a high-design condominium in Portland's Pearl District.
Kessi and company began their slog through planning and design in 2005, which everyone agrees was a frenzied year for condominium sales.

Furnish - Closing or not closing, that is the question
by shooter
So what gives with Furnish? For well over a year we have put up with the perpetual, tacky, and ugly "STORE CLOSING" and "UP TO 70% OFF" signs. Those signs were in the windows so long the once bright colors had faded, like the appeal of the store itself. Furnish was Roche Bobois until, as the rumor mill has it, the owner lost the Roche franchise. My personal experience with the store was when it transitioned from Roche to Furnish and was, shall we say, anything but customer service oriented. My order was never delivered, the store owner refused to talk to me, and it was AMEX that refunded my deposit a year later, not the store.
Recently the "STORE CLOSING" signs have been removed, but it still has that look of a store about to close offering an odd mix of mismatched merchandise. So what is the story with Furnish? Is it going to continue as a store that is perpetually "closing" trying to lure buyers who think they are getting a deal? Is it a dumping ground for merchan

The sculpture spa is now open
by pearlgirlJust walked past Jamison Square and noticed that Contact II -- the red orange sculpture was gone daddy gone. In its place were four caution ribbons. Here's the deal:
The sculpture is being removed today for conservation work. All the paint will be professionally removed and repainted with the appropriate color and type of paint as recommended by the Liberman Foundation. It will be at the sculpture spa for about two weeks.
