Million-Dollar Quotes
A WW quiz on who said what at a condo lottery, and at a forum on the homeless.
BY TOBY VAN FLEET
Pay attention—there will be a quiz at the end of this slice of life about housing irony in Portland.
Recently, Hoyt Realty Group lured hundreds of prospective buyers out on a rainy Thursday evening. The draw: a lottery and "stylish soiree" for the Metropolitan, an actual hole in the ground at Northwest 10th Avenue and Lovejoy Street that's soon to be the Pearl District's tallest and most luxurious condo.
With 136 units scheduled for completion in 2007 and a price per square foot ranging from $500 to $1,000, it's surprising that demand far outstrips supply. The lottery is packed for hours with white wine-sippers who study enlarged floor plans and write down preferences on lottery entry cards.
At first, it's "empty nesters," graying baby

Is the Pearl a really a “Craphole”? The Mercury thinks so
by pearlgirl
I wrote this as a submission to a local paper, but due to the article asking people to withdraw (or at least rethink) their advertising dollars, it wasn't printed. Not that I have a problem with that, I can see the point. However...I think it's definitely worth saying, so here it goes:
“It's common knowledge that the Mercury loves to make fun of the Pearl District. Lord how we loathe those yuppie yupsters with their yuppity-yup mobiles, and any restaurant that starts up in that condo-addled, godforsaken craphole has an uphill field to till with our esteemed food writers. Don’t you forget it!”
-Justin Wescoat Sanders
Portland Mercury, Volume 6, Issue 21
Well, one week later after reading this issue of The Mercury , I haven’t forgotten it. Thanks for the tip, Justin! Something about this article really left a bad taste in my mouth. Obviously, there is the sheer venom spewed at our neighborhood, but there’s more to it than that...

Feast your eyes on Babette
by pearlgirl
an excerpt from Portland Picks ...
Just a month new, Babette has opened in the W+K building on 13th. This women's clothing boutique creates comfortable and stylish "travel clothes for the modern woman." The space is clean and swanky, just like the building and block it's located in.
Babette carries gorgeous skirts, raincoats, tops, throws, and day and evening wear in cool fabrics and textures. They are elegant...yet they don't wrinkle. You can crumple them into your suitcase, travel Europe, with nary a crease. Or you can dance the night away, toss it in a heap on the floor when you return home late night, and voila! It's just like new and ready to be worn again. The styles are modern, extremely flattering and work on many sizes and ages.
They are so cute and comfy, and they even have loads of fabulous outwear to protect us from those evil raindrops.

by pearlgirl
SOLD! So says the sign in the retail space of Irving Street Lofts. Apparently, it was sold to a business called Poster Garden -a company that offers tradeshow solutions.
Now if we can just get a stop sign or stop light on 14th avenue! :-D

A shameless plug for Coho
by pearlgirl
Hello friends,
Well, it is time for a shameless plug for CoHo Productions , and a request for your assistance to keep me employed! This year is crucial for us - we've got to grow a large step to make CoHo self-sustaining, and maintain our current model. But you can have fun doing it!
There are several ways that you can help:
* Bring friends to see Nixon's Nixon. This show is terrific! Here's the Willamette Week review:
Nixon's Nixon
What transpired between Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger the night before Nixon's resignation? Playwright Russell Lees imagines an evening of drunken self-justification and bitter self-loathing. In director Jack Featheringill's production, the contrast and chemistry between the wiry, desperate president (Duffy Epstein) and his stoic secretary of state (Gary Brickner-Schulz) makes for fascinating theater. As Kissinger, Brickner-Schulz's reluctant engagement in acting out past and future scenarios with his highly d

Holy Horst Rechelbacher!!!
by pearlgirl
The mother of all make-overs is happening right here in the Pearl. The building at 322 NW 14th Avenue is being transformed into The Aveda Institute of Portland .
What is Aveda education?
Aveda Education teaches, inspires, nourishes, refreshes and connects people who aspire to be great creative hair stylists and nurturing spa technicians. We are a recruitment resource—developing students grounded in wellness, healing and social responsibility.
