***IMPORTANT*** Winter Tips from the Portland Water Bureau

by jenniferd
Coldweather Okay kiddies -- here's the scoop: the weather is cold, cold, freezing cold. You need to protect your plumbing or you could end up with a miserable, watery situation on your hands....please just trust me on this one! I've seen it too many times. No one wants frozen and/or exploding plumbing in the middle of a snowstorm. It's just not fun. Outside Plumbing Caulk around pipes where they enter the house. Close all foundation vents. Cut wood or Styrofoam blocks to fill vent openings, then slide them into the vents. (You'll want to open the vents again in the spring to prevent dry rot.) Protect outside pipes and faucets. If you have a separate shut off valve for an outside faucet, consider shutting it off and draining it for the winter. If you don't have a separate valve to turn off faucets, you can wrap outside faucets or hose bibs with insulation . Use newspaper or rags covered with plastic, fiberglass or molded foam-insulating covers (available at hardware stores) to

Home Office » Seven Tips to Increase Productivity

by pearlgirl
defteling-primary Everyone loves the idea of working from home. Although the thought of setting your own hours, working in your PJ's, having the world's best boss and eliminating that pesky commute is incredibly alluring—the reality is that working at home is incredibly difficult. Get in the Zone First things first: It's important to do a little checking and make sure that your home office meets local zoning requirements. There are reasons for residential and commercial zoning—it's not always possible to run your business out of your home. Your business can impact the traffic, parking and livability of your neighborhood. An upset neighbor, Homeowners Association or Neighborhood Association will definitely dampen your productivity. In Portland, the City recognizes two types of businesses that are suitable for residential zones: • Type A . A Type A home occupation is one where residents use their home as a place of work; however, no employees or customers/clients come to the

For now, vacant lot is neighbors' domain

by shooter
Would you ever think of opening a lot you own to the neighborhood for gardening and gatherings?  According to this story in The Oregonian, that's exactly what one couple is doing.  They provide the growing space, tools, and water.  Neighbors stake out plots and start planting.  What a great way to build community in your neighborhood.

From The Oregonian : Goings-on at a vacant lot in Northeast may be best described by Maryetta Jacques-Bietz: "It's just kind of a weird quilt of artsy gardening things over there." The owners, Jacques-Bietz and her husband, Matt Bietz, who live next door with their 23-month-old daughter, Sophia, have opened the lot to the community. Portland State University students used the lot -- on Northeast 15th, just south of Alberta Street -- for gatherings this spring. Neighbors have gardened on it for a few years and are now invited to sow 14 new plots. "Part of the garden project is: What can you do with

NE Portland Tool Library Opens July 19

by pearlgirl
Garden-Tools Now here's a good idea: if you need a tool for a project—don't buy it—check it out from the local tool library. That's just what NE neighbors will be able to do as of July 19th with the opening of the NE Portland Tool Library at NE 20th and Killingsworth. All you need to check out equipment is a NE Portland address and one form of ID. Borrow. Return. Repeat. If you have a tool to donate, contact Tom at tomscot51@yahoo.com or 503.539.1756. For more information on the NE Tool Library, contact Eric at ericfairlayman@yahoo.com or 503.754.0534.
