Portland Water Bureau Turns Off Groundwater Supply

by jenniferd
7620209 The Portland Water Bureau turned off its groundwater supply system this morning. The system has supplied Water Bureau customers with drinking water since high levels of turbidity forced the bureau to turn off its primary Bull Run water supply last week. "This was an unusual run of groundwater." said Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff. "When intense rain in the Bull Run causes excessive turbidity, that rain is generally followed by more rain which flushes the turbidity out. In this case, there was no more rain, so the levels of turbidity in the watershed remained above acceptable serving levels. Flushing has taken a bit longer than normal." While both of the bureau's water sources, the Bull Run watershed and the Columbia South Shore Well Field (CSSWF) meet and exceed all federal drinking water standards, the bureau relies primarily on the Bull Run source to provider customers with drinking water. The CSSWF is maintained as an emergency back-up for event

Water Bureau Temporarily Turns Off Bull Run Water Supply

by jenniferd
wellfield_1 The Water Bureau temporarily turned off the Bull Run water supply system this morning due to increased turbidity in the watershed. The bureau activated groundwater wells in the Columbia South Shore Well Field to temporarily serve water to Portland. Recent heavy rains and increased stream flows in the Bull Run watershed have contributed to this rapid increase in turbidity. Turbidity is a measurement of the cloudiness of (drinking) water by suspended particles. Portland is one of six large drinking water systems in the country that does not filter its water supply. The city is able to comply with federal drinking water regulations by continuously meeting a set of filtration avoidance criteria. Portland has been able to consistently meet these criteria, but it occasionally has to shut down the Bull Run system and operate from its backup groundwater supply when storms and other natural disturbances in the Bull Run reservoirs increase the turbidity. The Surface Water Treatment Rule

City Won’t Consider Street Name Change Until Next Year

by shooter
caser chavez According to the Portland Tribune , the Portland City Council won't consider a new proposal to change a street name in honor of Cesar Chavez until at least March 2009.

Proponents of the name change submitted more than 2700 signatures to the city on Oct. 30.  They are suggesting that one of three streets be selected, but say they do not have a preference.  The recommended streets are 39th Avenue, Broadway, or Grand Avenue.

The process for presenting the proposal is still being finalized, but the public will have at least one opportunity to comment on the proposed name change.

This name change will compete with the proposal to rename 42nd Avenue in honor of the author Douglas Adams.  City code says that only one street renaming is allowed per year.  The competing proposals could complicate matters.

The Douglas Adams group submitted in their application on August 4, the Caser Chavez group submitt

Now, get your palate revved up and ready for that delicate blend of saucy and smoky, heat and sweet and fallin' off the bone goodness that we call Barbeque. Cannon's Rib Express

One of the best things about Cannon's is Sundays- when New Orleans born saxophonist, Reggie Houston takes to the patio with one of his many bands. Houston, who has played with the likes of Ray Charles, Fats Domino, the Neville Brothers and Harry Connick, Jr. claims on his site (www.reggiehouston.com) that Cannon's is his favorite BBQ in town.

Bicycle Boulevards in NE Portland

by pearlgirl
nebike From Central Northeast Neighbors ... Do you ride your bicycle in NE Portland? Have you noticed that the only bicycle boulevard in the area is NE Tillamook? Well, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance has noticed. The BTA has researched the streets in NE Portland and found those streets that would work as a bicycle boulevard. NE Going Street is one of those streets. This street was chosen because it runs continuously for 3.5 miles with minimal auto traffic and low car speeds. It will also create a safe bike route to nine parks, eleven schools, nine neighborhoods, and four business districts, all in your community. Read more about this project at the BTA website, and get active! Contact Emily Gardner at Emily@bta4bikes.org for more information, and check out www.bikeblvd.com . Pearl District Changes — Exit World Cup, Enter Laughing Planet

by shooter
laughing planet logo World Cup Coffee in the Ecotrust Building will close its doors on Saturday. The company said that the Pearl location wasn't performing as well as its other stores. The lagging performance, along with other factors, led to the company's decision to close the store. World Cup's other locations will remain open, including its nearby store and roasting plant at NW 18th and Glisan. The Ecotrust Building is a prime location and you wouldn't expect it to remain empty for long—it's not, it's already leased! Laughing Planet has leased the space and will open a new café later this year. If you're not familiar with Laughing Planet, here's an excerpt from their website: "The Laughing Planet Café is a quick-service restaurant that serves nutritious fare in the form of tasty burritos (aka "PNDs" or "Portable Nutrition Devices"), bowls, soups, salads, smoothies, juices and home-made cookies. We are dedicated to making wholesome food a

On-Street Bike Parking in Downtown

by shooter
katu-bike-parking You may have seen them around town already, but if not, you will.  PDOT has added four new bike "corrals" at popular destinations in downtown. The new bike corrals replace two regular parking spaces, and provide parking for 16 to 24 bikes.  The locations for the corrals were selected based on traffic and are intended to serve the high volume of bikes arriving at the locations.  The on street parking also improves the pedestrian right-of-ways at these locations.  Without the on-street parking, bicyclists would lock their bikes to any poles or news boxes available, creating clutter and reducing the space for pedestrians. The new locations include: Ace Hotel, south side of SW Stark at SW 10th Ave. Bijou Cage and Stumptown coffee, east side of SW 3rd Ave. at SW Pine St. Powell's Books, south side of NW Couch St. at NW 11th Ave. Southpark Seafood Grill & Wine Bar, west side of SW 9th Ave./SW Park at SW Salmon St. These are in addition to the

Take the Streetcar Survey

by Trace
streetcar The Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) is currently drafting a Streetcar System Plan, with the intent of creating a citywide network. The purpose of the Streetcar System Plan (SSP) District Working Group process that is currently underway is to engage the public in the beginning of a long-range planning effort that will identify future streetcar corridors with the highest potential in a long-term implementation strategy. Specifically, the goal of the NE District Working Group process is to identify where community support for potential streetcar corridors is located in NE Portland. Currently, volunteers like us are doing community outreach to gauge the level of support in Northeast Portland along various corridors such as Broadway/Weidler, MLK Blvd, Alberta St, and 82nd Ave. The city has stated that new streetcar corridors will be prioritized in areas where community support exists.
