Notes of Interest » January 5

It's always great to give and receive props. Yesterday, the news was full of 'em: props of presidential proportion were bestowed on Portland's Get A Life Marching Band —they'll march in the inaugural parade; Mayor Adams gave props to Portlanders in his first mayoral address; Willamette Week showed a little love to Old Spaghetti Factory ; Hollywood Theater was given a special designation by Sundance Film Festival; and City Council got a little LUBA-love in support of their decision to make David Douglas a satellite urban renewal district. photo: Christmas w/a K

Notes of Interest » January 2–4
by pearlgirl
Good morning, 2009! Okay. I totally get that it's like, um, January 4—but, we've been been away from the office since Christmas Eve. It feels shiny and new to us! And, here's another thing that's new: optimism. This weekend's news was full of it: new city officials are being sworn in; a local dance company gets a new space; the bid deadline for the new park in South Waterfront was extended; and a local retailer gets a mention in Lucky Magazine. All reasons to celebrate. We like this new optimism. We'll definitely keep you posted. photo: We have the world's first pedicab peddling mayor. Cool, huh?

Here is our daily list of interesting links. One of the stories is about land that University of Portland has purchased. I believe the land is the McCormick & Baxter Creosote Plant superfund site. It has been a great site for photography, and most recently even used as a small skateboard park. I guess it's good the land will be used, but it's a great example of urban decay and I'll hate to see that go.

Notes of Interest » Weekend Recap
by pearlgirl
The weekend recap has some real gems: Santas on the loose in North Portland, a review of Bunk Sandwiches in Buckman, the friendliest store in Portland under siege by a not-so-friendly competitor, the convention center hotel proposal for the Lloyd District is on life support, and Old Town Chinatown's PHLUSH has launched a neighborhood hospitality campaign in honor of the new Portland loos. As Portland Turns, so are the days of our lives. Happy reading! photo: Portland Sentinel

Brian Libby is a mindreader. I've wanted to peek inside Hakoya Lofts on North Williams for a while now, and he published an article about it yesterday on Portland Architecture . It's definitely a 'note of interest' and we hope you enjoy it. photo: Brian Libby

Weekend Bookmarks » Things You May Have Missed (Nov 22 & 23)
by pearlgirl
Just in case you missed them, we found four Portland-related tidbits this weekend: a glowing review of Marc Acito's Holidazed , renewed excitement over Kenton's new public library, handy tips for vegans hosting carnivores for Thanksgiving, and the adventures of 156 volunteers in Hosford-Abernethy. Very satisfying reads.
