Portland Makes NYT List of 31 Summer Stops

by pearlgirl
The New York Times has named 31 interesting places to visit this summer. Portland made the list as a foodie haven: "As far as foodie havens go, Portland has been better known for its vegan cafes and eco-hippie cooperatives than for restaurants with gastronomic ambitions. But an emerging locavore movement has changed that. Drawn by the city’s low rents and artsy vibe, young chefs are breaking the culinary mold and tapping into the Northwestern bounty of local fisheries, small meat purveyors and artisanal farms. Sample the heat at places like Clyde Common (Southwest 10th and Stark; 503-228-3333; www.clydecommon.com ), which serves novel dishes like crispy pork belly with blood orange marmalade." How do you sell a trip to Portland to your family and friends? Read the full article

Neighbors and developers disagree about future of Northeast Portland golf course

by pearlgirl
djc0527Colwood If you're interested in saving this open space, visit the Save Our Open Space website for more information on the latest developments and how you can get involved. From the Daily Journal of Commerce... The push to rezone Colwood National Golf Club in Northeast Portland from open space to industrial has hit a snag, as the land-use hearing officer assigned to the project last week issued a report in favor of retaining the open-space designation for the 115-acre property. In his report, hearing officer Gregory Frank stated that neighborhoods near the golf course would benefit from preventing industrial businesses from developing on the land, which its owners are looking to sell. The conclusions of Frank’s report support the cause of several area neighborhood associations, including the Cully Neighborhood Association, which have in past weeks faced off against a dozen real estate professionals who have lobbied in favor of the industrial designation. Members of the neighborh

This pilot project will:
Explore how to increase and sustain the attractiveness of the Cully-Concordia area for families with school age children, and Create an action list and begin to build partnerships to follow up on ideas generated through this process. Key questions include:
How do anticipated growth, change and existing conditions in the study area affect local school capacity/viability and neighborhood livability? What is the potential for schools to serve as multi-purpose centers of community life in a way that also benefits their educational mission? What are the key missing neighborhood amenities and infrastructure that affect neighborhood livability for residents, including families with children? What are some potential strat

A Night on Alberta

by pearlgirl
siam Our friends Lisa Watson and Peter Shanky own a business in the Pearl , but live in the Alberta Arts District. Because they spend more time at work than home, we usually meet for happy hour or dinner in the Pearl, but last week on a rare day off, Lisa and Peter invited us “to their hood” for a night out on Alberta.

We met them at Bink’s , one of their favorite neighborhood spots for a brew. They just finished a round and suggested that we move down the street to the Siam Society patio for cocktails and appetizers. Good choice!

‘Warm weather’ is usually synonymous with ‘long wait’ with regard to patio seating, so we were surprised to find the spacious back patio nearly empty. Maybe it’s a case of out of sound, out of mind (most of the other restaurants and bars with street-facing patios were full), but it’s definitely not due to the food or drink. The Soi Cowboy (Tamarind pulp, whiskey bourbon, triple sec

Keep Colwood Green!

by pearlgirl
What is happening?: The current landowners of the Colwood National Golf Course (7313 NE Columbia Boulevard - 140 acres) want to rezone the area from Open Space (OS) - its present designation in zoning maps and in the Comprehensive Plan - to General Industrial 2 (IG2). The Bureau of Development Services held a hearing on the rezoning request and we are awaiting a recommendation from the hearing officer, Greg Frank. The hearing officer’s recommendation will then go to the City Commissioners for a vote. Why should I care?: The result of this proposed rezoning would be a permanent and significant loss of open space for Portland - 140 acres; and once it’s gone, it’s gone! Further, the Colwood Golf Course encompasses sizable portions of the Columbia and Whitaker sloughs. The impact on the habitat areas of the sloughs - especially the critical riparian habitat along the sloughs - will be substantial. This is why a number of local environmental activists have come

You Go, Girl!

by pearlgirl
2427127286_3235fd8a9e_m From Willamette Week... Second time’s the charm.

Naomi Pomeroy , chef/owner at Beast restaurant, exclusively told WW today that she's been chosen by Bon Appetit magazine as one of the top six female chefs in the country under 35-years-of-age .

Pomeroy is slated to do a photo shoot next week in Los Angeles, she says, and the issue is slated to go to print in September.

Pomeroy has been somewhat of a media darling of late – she’s currently featured in May’s Elle magazine with her Sous Chef Mika Paredes –and looks to be eclipsing single-handedly the successes she and ex-hub Michael Hebb racked up and then lost with the crumbling of their Ripe restaurant fiefdom. Nice going, girl. Read the full article photo by Alicia J Rose Beast 5425 NE 30th Portland, OR 97211
