Where the Wild Things Went

by roxanne

Well, they tore down what looked to be Maurice Sendak's house this past week. It's been a fixture on Williams Avenue for many years. For those of you who have driven by this place, you had to wonder what lived inside. If you are like me, I'll bet you imagined that the place was filled with the Wild Things or maybe that Maurice himself secretly lived inside, or maybe Maurice lived WITH the Wild Things inside. Though the exterior was forever plagued with graffiti attacks, whoever lived inside, maybe Maurice himself, had a way of getting those Wild Things back into their place pretty quickly. This one of a kind, magical place that has held such mystery will be greatly missed!

That's a pretty old photo, the graffiti was looking quite lovely as of late. A friend of mine asked if he could have one of the front panels, he was told by the construction workers to come back later after they talked to the owner. When he returned he was told that he could have one- for $100. Pssh. Whatever!

Yes--it is an old photo. I always meant to get back to get another shot but just never got around to it, for which I kicked myself when I saw the were tearing it down. It was amazing how it always seemed to get cleaned up after a gaffiti attack with new beasts onboard. Thanks for the lead on Charlie--I never heard of him.

Thanks so much for the info about Sendak. Too Shy to Stop writer Ariela Rose just did a piece about the Sendak exhibit in Philadelphia for our magazine. You can read the article here.
