• Increase in pedestrian robberies, especially near 9th and Sumner and 9th and Alberta Trees blocking streetlights on 9th - it is the responsibility of the homeowner to keep them trimmed., Contact city commissioner or Jane Ames, public safety contact. If neighbors have concerns about junk left out in front of houses, these could be building code violation - call Bureau of Development Services. Bicycle Boulevards in NE Portland

From Central Northeast Neighbors ... Do you ride your bicycle in NE Portland? Have you noticed that the only bicycle boulevard in the area is NE Tillamook? Well, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance has noticed. The BTA has researched the streets in NE Portland and found those streets that would work as a bicycle boulevard. NE Going Street is one of those streets. This street was chosen because it runs continuously for 3.5 miles with minimal auto traffic and low car speeds. It will also create a safe bike route to nine parks, eleven schools, nine neighborhoods, and four business districts, all in your community. Traffic Plan for Bridge Pedal

The 13th annual Providence Bridge Pedal on Sunday morning, August 10, will involve nine Willamette River bridges in Portland. The event includes three different cycle routes and one for walkers. As usual, the event will require some changes in how motorists get around the city, especially when crossing the Willamette River. Several bridges - including the Burnside, Morrison, and St. Johns - will remain open to vehicular traffic in both directions, despite the presence of cyclists and walkers. Here is the traffic plan for Bridge Pedal, starting with bridges from south to north: The Sellwood Bridge will be closed westbound from 6 am to 9 am. The Ross Island Bridge will be closed westbound at 5 am and will reopen by noon. The Marquam Bridge/Interstate 5 will be closed northbound (upper deck) from 2 a.m. to noon. TriMet - Bridge Pedal will affect service Sunday morning, Aug 10

Expect 15-minute delays downtown The 13th annual Providence Bridge Pedal on Sunday morning, August 10, will involve nine Willamette River bridges in Portland. The event includes three different cycle routes and one for walkers. As usual, the event will require some changes in how motorists get around the city, especially when crossing the Willamette River. Several bridges—including the Burnside, Morrison and St. Johns—will remain open to vehicular traffic in both directions, despite the presence of cyclists and walkers. TriMet buses and MAX trains may experience delays up to 15 minutes in downtown during the event. Buses are being routed off the Broadway Bridge for the event and the Steel Bridge is closed to all vehicular traffic because of construction. Clowns and very few cars on for Last Thursday

Unfortunately I'm still recovering from a different time zone (Thailand) and didn't have the energy to go to Last Thursday . Fortunately, Jonathan over at BikePortland did and has great coverage of the unofficial street closure. According to Jonathan, the evening went really well, the police handled the situation with patience, and as the evening progressed drivers did the logical thing and avoided Alberta. I hope the success of this evening is a launching pad to continue closing the street for Last Thursday. It makes it so much more enjoyable for all those who attend, and is really only a minor inconvenience for drivers.

Kidical Mass - Second Ride

Last night was the second Kidical Mass ride in Portland. Decorated bikes, a primer on rules of the road, and lots of kids excited to ride safely in the street. KPTV was there, and here's a link to a video and article on their website. This was my son's first time riding his own bike on the road while I biked next to him. I couldn't have asked for a safer way for him to get some time on the road. The ride leaders are excellent, the group stays together, and all the parents and kids are watching out for each other. This is a fabulous way to role model good riding skills, and have kids and adults learning together. Kidical Mass is now a regular event, taking place on the third Friday of every month. Portland Wheelmen Touring Club offers some fun rides especially for families and novice riders. An adult must accompany children and all riders must wear helmets. Arrive early. Group departs at time listed. Sunday, July 6 Vancouver Lake/Columbia River 10:00 am 15 miles Start at Vancouver Lake Park. I-5 to Mill Plain (Vancouver) Take Exit 1D/Fourth Plain Blvd. Go west (left) about 5 miles and follow signs to the Lake (on your right). The parking will cost about $2. We'll ride on low traffic roads country from Vancouver Lake Park, past French Bar Park and Caterpillar Island to the end of Old River Road and back. This will be a very scenic, family friendly ride. Gas-Free Fridays - July 4th

Gas-Free Fridays is a good excuse to get on my new city bike and cruise around town. Today I decided to get up early and go for a ride; I ended up at Sellwood Waterfront Park. It was a great way to start the day. So this Friday it's no car for me. Any last minute trips to the store for barbeque supplies, beer, etc will be on my bike. Actually, I'm trying to do many more of these trips by bike and avoid using my greatly-decreased-in-value SUV as much as possible. The vehicle is almost 10 years old, so it didn't have much value to begin with. But it has low miles, just in case you're interested... Yes that's me with my Amsterdam bike. You can never look cool in a bike helmet.
