King PTA September Meeting Minutes

by Trace
Minutes of the King School PTA General Membership Meeting
September 4, 2008

PTA President, Karen Bernius called the meeting to order at 6:00pm.

King School Principal LaDrena Rhodes reported on a successful start to the new school year. The new school uniforms seem to be embraced by everyone and helped to create a calm, respectful atmosphere. Principal Rhodes also requested parent participation on Site Council.

Carissa Thomas, SUN School coordinator expanded on what the SUN program had to offer besides the well-known after school programs. She proposed that PTA and SUN work together for common goals and fundraising.

The development of the School Student Directory was discussed. It was proposed that donation letters be developed to include advertising to businesses that assist with printing costs. This will be further discussed at the next meeting.

Talishia Tupper proposed that a King School PTA mission statement be developed. This was accepted and the PTA is to combine the mission statements of the national PTA, King School, and International Baccalaureate Program.

The development of a PTA bulletin board at the school was discussed as a way to inform parents and teachers of PTA activities. Talishia Tupper has agreed to assist with this project.

"Parents on Patrol" was opened up for discussion. Principal Rhodes reported that the greatest need for playground supervision was in the morning and possibly the afternoon. Recruitment ideas need to be further discussed.

Upcoming activities including the Alberta Street Fair (September 13) and the King School Open House (September 25) were discussed. Carissa Thomas stated some ideas regarding participation in the Street Fair. Volunteers are needed to speak at the School Open House. Karen Bernius is waiting to hear about a Safeway Donation for the ice cream social during the Open House.

Several great ideas were brought up regarding increasing parent involvement with the school, as well as increasing community awareness of the great events happening at King School. These ideas need to be fine-tuned and streamlined during the next PTA meeting.

All participants were thanked for their enthusiastic involvement during this meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 pm.

Karen Bernius, PTA President
