Alberta Street Oyster Bar & Grill
by stockboy
Let me preface this post by stating that I am not a food critic, but I enjoy eating out and experiencing new and unique restaurants. Whether a simple breakfast or an elegant ‘gourmet ‘dinner, the opportunity to taste and savor Portland is in my blood. These are only my opinions [and Barbara's too] about our eating experiences. Take them for what you think they are worth!
This evening we had the opportunity to go to a ‘media event' for the Alberta Street Oyster Bar & Grill. Although they opened some months ago this event was scheduled to showcase their new menu, chef and mixologist!
The chef is a 27-year-old who is experienced beyond her years. Laurel Gunderson, professionally trained, has created a menu that is both inviting and tasteful. Her preparation used the best the NW has to offer and is prepared with a subtle, yet ‘full flavored,' flair.
When we arrived, a superbly-crafted pomegranate mojito, prepared by Derek Palmer, was served chilled and topped with a mint sprig by our host Bruce Kaad. Being a warm summer day this cool and refreshing cocktail set the mood for the evening.
The first course was a freshly seared sea scallop atop a braised pork belly with a delicate Gastrique, a thick sauce produced by a reduction of vinegar or wine, sugar, and usually fruit. In this preparation crab apples were used adding a slight tang! Each course was matched with a wine selected by Nita Jacura the wine buyer. A steaming bowl of blue mussels were served with a fennel, mild garlic and spiced chili pepper broth surrounded with toasted crusty bread for dipping! For an entrée both a wild mushroom ravioli floating on a buerre blanc sauce and a braised pork cheek prepared with roasted artichokes and fingerling potatoes with blue cheese and ‘cheek jus' were plated and served . This course was matched with a Willamette Valley Illahe Pinot Noir '07. There is not more to be said about the food and drinks other than we can't wait to go back! Alberta Street Oyster Bar and Grill has arrived!
