Sellwood-Moreland's Only Tea House

by evil genius
Jade Teahouse & Patisserie has opened along Sellwood's bustling "Antique Row" on SE 13th Avenue.

This spacious and bright teahouse offers a kid-friendly, savory, sweet, and cozy coffeehouse alternative for residents and travelers through the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood. Just a few blocks from the traffic of Tacoma Street and the Sellwood Library, Jade opens in time for our much-needed winter warm-ups.

Owner April Ecklund designed the interior herself, from choosing the bamboo-like mosaic tile beneath the counters to the sophisticated, yet cozy furniture. About the assorted knick-knacks for sale, Ecklund says, "I just pick things that amuse me. I hope they amuse someone else too."

All of the loose teas are available for purchase, or you can have them brew up a pot if you want to stay a while. If you're not sure what kind of tea you're in the mood for, Ecklund has them organized in handy magnetic containers by price range and caffeine content. She can also make knowledgeable recommendations.

You are invited to look, sniff, and sample your way about the place as my daughter found out by getting a free almond cookie.

“We make everything here. My mom does most of the cooking,” says Ecklund as she gestures to a plate of one-hour old baked BBQ pork hum bao. Her mother Lucy used to own Beau Thai on NW 21st Avenue, but now devotes her talents and long hours to this new culinary endeavor. Other made-from-scratch delights include Vietnamese wedding cake, cookies, baguettes, soups, and sandwiches.

Upon Ecklund’s recommendation, I ordered a pot of “Honey Cup” tea—a blend of rooibos and honeybush.  On a bamboo tray, she served our tea in a clear glass Bodum tea pot over a tea light infuser. She even brought a cup of ice to cool it down for my daughter who was already quite preoccupied with her raspberry cupcake.

Next time you’re in the mood for something different than the old scone-and-coffee-with-room-for-cream order, wander on in to Jade and ask April what’s brewing.

I live right down the street, and have been there many times now. We've had the chicken and pork sandwiches, pork hum bao, udon soup, beef stew and a couple of the cookies. Everything has been great. The fries were not to our liking (we like thin, crispy fries), but they weren't bad, per se. Ironically, maybe, I've only had tea there once, but that's mainly because I have plenty at home.

Excellent! I am a native of Portland and have remained here all my life. I discovered this place by accident a week ago and I am a regular now. I am thoroughly impressed with this new teahouse and restaurant. The owners Lucy and April are a dilight and the Vietnamese coffee and fermented Asian teas and the impeccable preperation are to return for again and again. The soups are exquisite as are the home made pastries by Lucy. I would move across the street just for the convenience of being here daily. They have also mentioned a license to serve alcohol soon. I can see this becoming a world class retaurant. Mark
