The only beer festival in the Northwest to be held outdoors in the dark, cold and often wet month of December, the Holiday Ale Festival is truly distinctive. Despite chilly temperatures and often-inclement weather outside, attendees stay warm and dry under a large clear topped tent that covers the venue. Gas heaters create a cozy ambience under the boughs of one of the region's largest decorated Christmas trees. Thirty six + potent winter ales are featured at the event, all of which are created specifically to bring warmth and cheer to the holiday season. The beers are rich, robust and full of complex flavors. They range from Imperial IPAs, Belgians and Barley Wines to Winter Warmers, Scotch Ales and Stouts. Sweet Masterpiece  has generously organized a Chocolate Shop Tour for kids and the adults who care for them. Curious what a 10 pound block of chocolate looks like? Then this is the tour for you. Children will learn about chocolate making, watch staff as they dip candies, and make their own hot chocolate. And adults, if that's not enough for you, save the date for Sweet Masterpiece's wine and chocolate paring on 12/8.

Reservations are necessary for this event. We're trying something new in an attempt to make reservations more fair. We'll collect all reservation requests for 72 hours.   December kicks off the traditional start to Dungeness crab Season; Chef Dan Brophy shows you how to take advantage of Oregon's bounty The crab season comes but once a year-and Oregon has some of the best crab there is. Marking the 75th Anniversary of the 21st Amendment's ratification, Repeal Day , on December 5th celebrates the end of Prohibition. In honor of this diamond day, the Pearl District hot spot 50 Plates will offer a Manhattan cocktail tasting featuring the classic Applejack Manhattan, Rye Manhattan, and Bourbon Manhattan for $9.00. A mini flight of these Manhattan cocktails will be offered for $9, or $3 individually. Repeal Day drinks specials are available from noon to close.

The current cocktail list at 50 Plates showcases their creative implementation of vintage cocktails. With references to the date of origin, the compilation features many classics, and a few soon-to-be classics created by star bartenders Suzanne Allard and Lance Mayhew.

The U.S. Wushu Center invites you to an Open House on Saturday, December 6th at 5:00.  The open house will include martial arts demonstrations. This is your chance to see great Wushu and Taichi performances by masters from China as well as teachers and students After the performances there will be a holiday party including food (potluck), a DJ, dancing and a drawing for prizes. This is a family-friendly event and is open and free to everyone. Those of you who attend  Indoor Active Play  will recognize the space, as the party will be held in the basketball court that we rent on Mondays and Tuesdays. Master Yu Shaowen is the host.
