Neighborhood Notes

Join the Oregon College of Art and Craft for a two-day workshop that introduces the basics of embroidery to the beginning student and provides enhanced technical and conceptual direction to those more advanced. Students will experiment with hand embroidery and appliqué using both traditional and non-traditional materials. Participants leave with a small sampler of these explorations, along with new inspiration to continue work on their own. This workshop is held in conjunction with the exhibition, Darrel Morris: The Large Works 1999-2008. January 24-25, 9am-4pm

This season's Facets of Africa gallery exhibit features Kenyan artist Jacob Wachira Ezigbo and photography focusing on the Matatu and the lives and culture of Kenyans living in Nairobi. Free.(503)823-4322 Jacob Wachira Ezigbo was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1975, he cannot recall a time he was not drawing or painting. One of his favorite things to do was to create brightly colored murals on the sides of the houses in Mathare. Mathare is a gigantic slum in Nairobi where Jacob was born and spent his childhood. Jacob has traveled about the world yet he has chosen to return to Mathare where his lives today. After completing primary and secondary school Ezigbo went on to study graphic design at The Kenya Polytechnic in Nairobi. In 2002 Ezigbo won "The Best Artist Award" in Kenya under the Ruth Hunt Wood Foundation. Sharing insights and observations from his recent trip to France, PNCA alumnus George Johanson '50 will visit PNCA to talk about the cave art of prehistoric Europe. Evaluating these mysterious images from an artist's perspective, Johanson will explore what these early paintings tell us about the nature of homo sapiens as visual thinkers.
